Meet the owner

While most people get their music digitally, there is a core (and growing) group of music fans hooked on a century-old technology. “They want a tangible artifact,” says Dennis Reynolds, referring to vinyl records. “They want to engage in music in a way that is more their own.”

The co-owner of June Records notes that while vinyl never really went away, sales are now higher than they’ve been in two decades. About 90 per cent of new recordings are also released in the older analog format as well as digitally. “Vinyl has always been collectible but there is a different quality to the sound, which is vastly superior to digital.”  Dennis says it’s not that it’s a warmer sound, "it’s got more depth. If the song was recorded in a big room, you can hear that. When digitized, things are too compressed to notice those kinds of nuances.”
